Spike in theft out of motor vehicles in Sinoville

Minister Cele’s stats revealed that the Sinoville policing precinct have an increase of 9.4% in theft out of motor vehicles with 58 recorded cases.

A spike in the number of theft out of motor vehicle incidents in Sinoville has been recorded, according to the local CPF.

Sinoville CPF spokesperson Lizette du Plooy said parking outside schools, small businesses and shopping centres as well as fuel stations are targeted for the theft.

She advised motorists to avoid leaving valuables in sight in their vehicle as this attracts criminals.

“Avoid leaving valuables such as wallets, handbags, phones, laptops, or other electronics in your car. If you must leave something in your vehicle, ensure it is stored out of sight in the boot,” Du Plooy said.

She said in most instances thieves smash and break the car window to steal the valuables.

On February 16, police minister General Bheki Cele reported the third quarter crime statistics for 2023/24 lifting the lid on criminal activities recorded by South Africa’s 1 163 police stations countrywide between October and December 2023.

This period is then compared to the same period since 2019.
Sinoville featured in Gauteng’s top 30 list in six crime categories.

The area made the national top 30 list for its increases of 19.3% in commercial crimes, 32.6% in motor vehicle or motorcycle theft, and 9.4% in theft out of motor vehicle and truck hijackings.

Cele said Sinoville police recorded 58 cases of theft out of vehicles, five more than the previous quarter.

Commercial crime and theft of motor vehicles or motorcycles in Sinoville was highest in five years.

The Sinoville CPF offered the following safety tips against these crimes:

– Lock your vehicle: Always remember to lock or close your car doors and windows when parking. This simple step will deter many opportunistic thieves.

– Park in a well-lit area: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in a well-lit area, preferably where there are security cameras or in in a high-traffic location. Thieves are less likely to target a vehicle in highly visible areas.

– Avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle.

– Instal security devices: Improve the security of your vehicle by installing a car alarm, steering wheel locks, or a tracking device. These devices can deter thieves and increase your chances of recovering your vehicle if it is stolen.

– Be cautious while refuelling: When refuelling your vehicle, do not leave it unattended. Thieves tend to target vehicles left momentarily unattended at fuel stations.

– Be aware of your surroundings: Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, especially when leaving or approaching your vehicle. If you notice any suspicious individuals or activities, report them immediately.

– Use a parking garage or secure parking: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in a secure parking garage. Such a spot usually has surveillance cameras and security, reducing the risk of theft.
