Mams woman teams up with centre to gift needy kids with school stationery and uniforms

The collaboration is aimed at making more people aware of the school uniform collection project benefiting poor learners.

A young Mamelodi woman has decided to collaborate with a local organisation to donate school uniforms and sanitary pads to the needy on Tuesday.

Kagiso Leso of Mamelodi West has been collecting school shoes and uniforms for poor learners since 2019.

However, she decided to collaborate with Thandanani Drop Inn Centre to be part of its back-to-school uniform and stationery drive.

Leso said they collected “gently used” as well as new school uniforms and school shoes from those who no longer needed them.

She said it was her dream from a young age to help poor people in and around her community.

“I have seen many schoolchildren going to school not having proper school uniforms for their schooling.”

Leso said the collaboration with the centre was aimed at involving more people and making them aware of the project.

The main goal is to help many children with school uniforms in Mamelodi, including surrounding areas.

“We need help collecting school uniforms and stationery to empower students and enhance our children’s educational journey.

We are not collecting only school uniforms and school shoes, but pencils, notebooks, rulers, crayons, markers, flip files, and scissors,” she said.

The centre has also found more children who needed school uniforms and shoes.

Lesego Mashishi of the centre said they have partnered with Leso, who was only collecting school uniforms, school shoes, and clothes.

She said the organisation also helped her to identify more children who needed school clothes.

“We are running a back-to-school uniform and stationery drive with Leso, who had a uniform donation event at Blue Bin over the weekend and handed it over to Thandanani Drop-in Centre,” said Mashishi.

Leso thanked aerobics team Leefit for agreeing to be part of the event and making sure it becomes a success.

She said she wished more investors would help in this project to make it extra big, and going forward, that it would grow to areas outside Mamelodi.

The back-to-school stationery and uniform drive continues with the drop-off location being the Thandanani Drop-Inn Centre.
