Centurion rising talent releases debut single, Wie Ek Is

Hoërskool Centurion’s Jade Nova has released her anticipated debut single, Wie Ek Is, on her 17th birthday.

The rising star hosted a pre-release party on Saturday before the official release of the song on February 4.

“I had the idea that I really wanted to release the song on my birthday,” Jade told Rekord.

“I felt that it would be the best birthday gift I had ever gotten.

“Everyone there got an exclusive first listen to my song.

“They enjoyed it so much! It had people dancing, taking out their flash lights. It was so special.”

The release comes after a fundraising show, Roses Raise, that Jade hosted in her school hall in October 2023.

Jade waited in anticipation while finishing the school year before she flew down to Cape Town to put her plan into motion.

“Go big or go home,” was the motto driving her through the time.

Jade worked with award-winning producer, Werner Beukes, to bring her song to life.

“We clicked instantly,” she said.

“We listen to the same kind of music, we have the same tastes, so it wasn’t a case of ideas coming from different places. We were on the same page from the start.”

Jade told Rekord that she wanted to become a singer since she could remember, as music had always been an important part of her life.

She soon caught the attention of a friend’s vocal coach, and that led to her journey with singing under the guidance of Angie Bouwer.

“I was so excited; this was something that could help me build my dream of becoming a singer,” Jade said.

Her debut song was a result of years of dreaming and planning, and she is very excited that it is all coming together.

“I wrote this song about trying to figure out who I am, and the whole teenage experience of discovering your good and bad traits, and things that happen to you during this time.

I felt like it was something that everyone could relate to, because everyone has been there and are still trying to figure it out.”

Jade’s songwriting is an emotional outlet for her, allowing her to cope with the whirlwind of emotions that come with being a modern teenager.

Initially, she didn’t know where to start.

“I’d never written an Afrikaans song, so this was my first one.

But in the end, it came so naturally to me.”

In the song, Jade uses the typical teenage experience of writing a diary to open up about herself.

“It felt more personal, like taking a page out of my personal diary and into the song,” she said.

Jade already has plans to release her next song later in the year, but for now is very excited to share her current one, available on streaming platforms.
