Metro cuts power to 70 homes in arrears

Tshwane issued 188 disconnection job cards, mostly for residential households that owe the city a combined R50-million.

The Tshwane metro has disconnected 70 clients in one day of the #Tshwane Ya Tima operation as it tries to recoup all the monies owed.

MMC for Finance Jacqui Uys said the campaign targets all non-paying customers, including businesses, individual households and residential estates.

Uys said on Monday, February 5, Tshwane issued 188 disconnection job cards, mostly for residential households that owe R50-million combined.

“From this list, 70 accounts were immediately disconnected. Along with the disconnections, the city also imposes steep fines for meter tampering and illegal connections,” Uys said.

She said the metro is targeting about 1 500 high-end defaulting consumers who owe the city billions of rands.

“As we intensify our revenue-collection campaign, I wish to appeal to residential estate managers to allow city meter readers to do their job and not block access. It is important that we work together but, if necessary, we will use law enforcement.”

Uys said if monies owed are not paid the city will be unable to afford to render services such as water and electricity.

“I want to emphasise that the city needs revenue to deliver services and to honour commitments to creditors such as Eskom and Rand Water.”

She urged residents to pay their bills on time and in full.

“We call on all defaulting customers to come forward and make payment arrangements to keep their accounts in good standing. We are firm in our stance that the financial rescue of the city is non-negotiable, therefore, every effort must be made to restore the city to a financially healthy position as quickly as possible.”
