Tshwane Emergency Services are asking residents to take heed of the heatwave warning recently issued by the South African Weather Services (SAWS).
The ongoing high temperatures which started yesterday (Tuesday, February 6) are expected to continue until Friday, February 9.
“The emergency services department has noted that temperatures in areas such as Hammanskraal are anticipated to rise to 37ºC. We call on residents to be aware of adverse effects that may be caused by extended exposure to extreme heat weather conditions,” said Tshwane EMS spokesperson deputy chief Charles Mabaso.
“The effects may include dehydration, heat exhaustion and, in severe circumstances, heat stroke,” Mabaso added.
Residents are urged to make use of the following heatwave safety tips:
– Stay hydrated by drinking large amounts of water.
– Limit outdoor activities (especially during the hottest time of the day).
– Wear loose clothing and avoid dark-coloured clothing.
– Remain in the shade where possible.
– Keep an eye out on vulnerable individuals.
– Don’t leave children or animals in parked vehicles.
– Avoid strenuous physical activity if possible.
Residents are also urged to be vigilant and immediately report any fire or rescue incidents on the 107 toll-free number or on 012 358 6300/6400. For ambulance services, call 112 toll-free.
Monitor warnings and alerts issued by SAWS and other government agencies.
