Fatal accident near Brakfontein interchange

A pregnant woman in her 30s tragically lost her life in an accident.

A pregnant woman died in an accident on the N1 south near the Brakfontein interchange on Tuesday afternoon.

“Multiple emergency service agencies responded to a horrific motor vehicle collision,” said Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.

“A luxury SUV overturned, a woman had been ejected during the crash and was in a critical condition.”

CERT, a non-profit and public beneficiary organisation, said when its medics arrived at the scene before 13:00, the vehicle lay across two lanes of the highway.

It said all southbound lanes of the highway had to be closed for a Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter to land.

“The patient that was ejected from the vehicle sustained serious injuries,” said CERT.

“Despite immediate medical attention, the patient in her 30s and pregnant, tragically succumbed to her injuries.”

CERT said two other occupants of the vehicle, including a toddler, sustained minor injuries and were assessed by medical personnel on-site.

“As the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, law enforcement authorities have initiated an accident investigation to ascertain the details,” said CERT.

The scene was cleared and the highway fully opened by 19:00.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident.

We urge everyone to exercise caution on the roads and prioritise safety at all times,” CERT said.
