Older people encouraged to join soccer team

Sitting at home and doing nothing, especially for senior citizens is not healthy, according to one of the founders, Sarah Shonisani.

Senior Mamelodi citizens who love to play soccer and show off their skills are invited to join the Gogo Sundowns soccer team.

The soccer team has already started recruiting new players for this year and starts training on February 6.

One of the founders, Sarah Shonisani said the team trains at Muckleneuk sports grounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 08:00 to 09:30.

She said the team was looking for members from the age of 45 and above.

Shonisani said since joining the team, the elderly people have been feeling stronger and happier.

“The exercise helps the healing process, reducing the visits to the doctor and helping fight boredom at home,” she said.

She said before joining the club, many frequently visited hospitals and clinics complaining about body pains, diabetes and high blood pressure, but after joining the team it has decreased and they are living a healthier lifestyle.

Shonisani said her blood pressure used to be so high that she sweated from doing very little activity. “Now I feel healthier and stronger.”

She said exercising is good for elderly people.

“Sitting at home and doing nothing, especially for senior citizens is not healthy,” said Shonisani.

She said joining the club also fights boredom, it helps with getting fresh air and it is fun to meet new and old friends.

Shonisani also appealed for sponsorship and donations “for the team to grow”.

She said the team needed training equipment such as soccer balls and t-shirts.
