Sosh wife, jealous boyfriend get life for murder of husband

The boyfriend the mastermind, he planned it all – securing the killers, taking them to and from the scene and after the murder, court told.

A Soshanguve woman, her boyfriend and a local CPF member have each been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her husband in 2019.

Marriod Ndebele (47), boyfriend Piet Tlowaye Monyai (62) and CPF member Tshepo Frans Kekana (40) had earlier been found guilty of the premeditated murder of Marriod’s husband Farai Ndebele in 2019.

They were sentenced on Wednesday, January 31 in the Pretoria high court, said NPA Gauteng spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

She said Marriod was further sentenced to 15 years in prison for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, five for unlawful possession of ammunition, 15 for robbery with aggravating circumstances and three for defeating the administration of justice. A total of 38 years.

She said Kekana was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, five for unlawful possession of ammunition and 25 for robbery with aggravating circumstances, a total of 45 years.

Mahanjana said Marriod has been married to Farai for 25 years, and the couple had two children.

“However, Marriod was also involved in a love relationship with Monyai.

On June 14, 2019, Marriod arranged with Monyai’s grandson Koketso Piet Monyai (24), who has already been sentenced for this matter, and Kekana to kill her husband.”

Mahanjana said Koketso had taken Marriod to his friend to get a gun. She paid for it, with R750 she had received from her boyfriend.

She said four days later, the boyfriend drove Koketso and Kekana to Marriod’s home, where they shot Farai dead.

“Then Marriod instructed the trio to to remove some of Farai’s property to stage a robbery. After they had left, she reported the matter to the police, and said she did not know the killers.”

Mahanjana said following an investigation, on June 22, 2019, Marriod was arrested at her home, while the boyfriend and his grandson were arrested two days later at their Soshanguve homes.

She said all pleaded not guilty to the charges and Kekana guilty to a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

After conviction, Mahanjana said the accused asked the judge not to impose the prescribed minimum sentence for murder while Monyai senior implored the court to consider his advanced age at sentencing.

Mahanjana said prosecutor Advocate Ronnie Sibanda however told the court that there was no justification for Marriod to kill her husband, only motivated by the jealousy of her boyfriend.

She said Sibanda told the court that Monyai senior was the mastermind behind the murder.

“He planned it all, brought all the participants together and fetched them after the incident. Kekana was not a first-time offender, he committed this offence while out on probation after he was convicted and sentenced for rape and robbery,” Sibanda had told the court.

He asked the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence.

Judge Portia Phahlane said everyone had a right to life, and that the courts must protect that right.

“The deceased was killed because his wife was blinded by love,” said Phahlane.

Phahlane agreed with the state that the three had showed no remorse for their actions and therefore found no substantial and compelling reasons to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence.

NPA Gauteng director of public prosecutions Sibongile Mzinyathi welcomed the sentence and applauded the work of the investigating officer Sergeant Peter Mafako Madau, which enabled the NPA to secure a conviction and sentence.
