Police arrest 339 during operations in Mamelodi

Among the arrests were 10 suspects in rape cases.

Police arrested 339 people in Mamelodi on various charges during Operation Shanela last week.

The operation took place primarily in Mamelodi West and consisted of high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illicit liquor outlets.

“Tshwane detective successfully apprehended 294 suspects. Among them 80 individuals involved in gender-based violence (GBV) crimes, one charged with murder, four for attempted murder, seven for armed robbery and 10 for rape,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.

“Three uniformed groups, comprising two tactical teams and a roadblock group, were tasked to police the area of Mamelodi West. The tactical groups inspected four liquor premises. Two were not compliant with the Liquor Act and thousands of litres of liquor were confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal cases.”

He said 41 undocumented immigrants were detained and will undergo deportation once the legal processes have been finalised and another two suspects were arrested and fined for employing undocumented immigrants.

“One suspect was arrested for dealing dagga when 100 ziplock bags containing dagga were found in his possession and another person was arrested for possession of drugs when four ziplock bags containing various narcotics were found in his possession.

Throughout the operation, a total of 35 premises, 1 050 persons and 560 vehicles were searched, which resulted in the issuing of 339 Aarto infringement notices totalling R234 520 and a vehicle was impounded for not being roadworthy.

One secondhand goods dealership was inspected and found compliant with the Secondhand Goods Act. The Department of Labour inspected a further eight businesses and subsequently issued all with contravention notices.

The operation was executed with various agencies, including the home affairs, labour and traffic departments, the Tshwane metro police, crime prevention wardens, CPFs from the respective stations and ward councillors,” he said.
