Tshwane Mayor celebrates Dricus du Plessis’s victory

South Africans and Pretorians woke up as champions yet again, as Dricus du Plessis was crowned UFC middleweight champion.

Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink has on Sunday joined millions of sports lovers and Pretorians by congratulating Dricus du Plessis on being the official Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion.

Brink took to X formerly known as Twitter to congratulate Du Plessis on his achievements.

“Our homeboy did it. Dricus du Plessis defeats Sean Strickland to become the new UFC Middleweight Champion. Congratulations champ,” Brink said.

The mayor said the entire city was proud of the newly crowned middleweight champion.

In a fight that enjoyed unprecedented international publicity beforehand, Pretoria’s MMA superstar, Dricus du Plessis, beat the American, Sean Strickland, early Sunday morning (SA time) with a split points decision over five rounds to take the latter’s title and be crowned as the new UFC middleweight champion.

The two men fought like true titans for the full five rounds of five minutes each and Strickland showed why most of his fights in this sport so far have resulted in points decisions.

He may not have the technical ability of Du Plessis and other top fighters, but he is as tough as nails.

Before the fight during an interview with UFC channel Dricus said the fight was one way of putting out his name out there. “I have the opportunity to be the champion of the world right now. It’s incredible,” he said.

In celebrating our very own Pretorian and South African Champion, one X user said Americans can send people to the moon but can’t pronounce Drikus.

“Americans can put a man on the moon but they can’t pronounce “Drikus” – what is a “Dreycus??”.
