Local church to offer community clinic by March

Partners involved aim to convert the area into a community upliftment precinct.

To celebrate its 120 years, the Sunnyside Methodist Church and its partners intend to open a community clinic this March.

Inspired by the Moot Project and Pretoria North community, the effort forms part of the area’s community upliftment precinct (CUP).

Ward 59 councillor Shaun Wilkinson said he hopes more communities around the metro adopt CUPs this year as they tackle issues sooner.

“We still have the Adopt-a-Spot opportunity, but now we have introduced the CUP interventions, a shorter/quicker way for communities to tackle projects in their wards, regions and precincts. There is still the more comprehensive method of engaging, which is the IMSD Policy (internal municipal service district),” Wilkinson said.

The purpose is to assist residents, businesses and communities in entering into a formal agreement with the metro to maintain and improve public infrastructure within their residential, business and industrial areas.

When renovations are completed, the parties said the building will be a community hub for nearby residents.

“My dream/wish of getting another clinic in the precinct is happening. It is going to be inside the Sunnyside Methodist Church Complex and it should be open in February/March,” Wilkinson continued.

The clinic is expected to provide basic healthcare services to residents among others.

The effort also forms part of the ongoing urban revival efforts coordinated by the metro last festive season which looks at tackling the poor visual appearance of the capital’s CBD.

This includes attending to basic services such as grass cutting, pothole-filling, road marking, fixing streetlights and clearing illegal dumpsites.
