Kentron substation upgrade expected to be concluded in a year

Residents can rest assured that work on the renovation project is well on track.

Residents of Centurion and the surrounding areas can now breathe a sigh of relief after Tshwane confirmed the refurbishment of Kentron substation is well on course.

“The project was awarded for a period of three years and it is expected to be completed by the end of February 2025,” city spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said on Tuesday.

Mashigo said the long electrical cables ordered have arrived and are safely on site.

“Yes, the outdoor equipment has been delivered. The indoor equipment is being kept in storage until the new substation building is ready to house it,” he emphasised.

Mashigo said construction had begun, adding that the appointed contractor was busy with the construction of the new substation.

On how much money had been spent on construction since inception, he said so far it was estimated to be R47 370 239, with the bulk being spent on procurement of electrical equipment.

Last year construction on the R8-million upgrade was marred with allegations of corruption and maladministration.

This after Rekord had received claims that, despite the hefty sum being spent on the project, there have been few visible upgrades made to the substation.

Allegations at that stage included that there was no material on site and the project manager had yet to appoint workers.

Mashigo dismissed the claims, saying there was a reasonable explanation to justify the amount spent.

He said the contractor had placed orders for the long-lead electrical equipment with various suppliers, hence there were delays.

“Consequently, a lot of off-site work involving the manufacture of equipment at the factories is currently underway.

“The metro was also conducting factory acceptance tests on the material, some of which had been cleared for delivery to the site,” he said then.
