A 5,000 reward to anyone who helps find the missing meerkat named Spencer

A R5000 reward is up for grabs to anyone who could help a Pretoria family find and capture their beloved Meerkat, Spencer.

A Pretoria East family is giving a R5000 reward to anyone who could help them find and capture their beloved Meerkat, Spencer.

Through their statement on social media, the family said Spencer got lost while he was exploring the city.

“My daughter from Bothaville came to visit us with Spencer. Spencer went exploring the city and couldn’t find the house because he didn’t know the way. If you see a Meerkat, please call me,” the statement read.

The family also alluded that their daughter was not emotionally well due to her lost cat.

“She has to go back to the farm and is sick with worry. He walks around loosely. We live in the Waterkloof Glen”.

The Meerkat owner, Anelde Botha, said “Spencer” got lost on the 12th of November, 2023.

Botha said they have not received any information with regard to Spencer since his disappearance.

“No, unfortunately, nobody came forward, and we are scared that he is held in a cage as he is used to moving freely. He is not dangerous at all and very tame,” she said.

Botha also said Spencer was free from rabies as he was vaccinated.

“He is part of the family, and our hearts are broken.”

The Meerkat were made popular due to the massive success of the film The Lion King and the later success of the Animal Planet show Meerkat Manor.

The Animal Planet Show was a documentary seeking to highlight the daily lives of social animals.

According to Planet Helpful Meerkats are drably coloured but probably appeal to humans because of their ability to stand like a person when they are on the lookout for predators.

“This simple characteristic has given them a perceived charisma among humans, and the interest in them as pets has understandably increased”.

The Planet Hehelpful further described Meerkat as social mongooses.

“Meerkats belong to the family Herpestidae and the order Carnivora, which includes mongooses and kusimanses.

They are more closely related to mustelids and viverrids.
Once meerkats are understood to be mongooses, their behavior in captivity starts to make more sense.

Other mongoose species may make better pets,” concluded the Planet.
