Tshwane launches community project to improve public infrastructure

Communities can plant flowers, cut grass, paint and repair pavements, patch potholes and so on.

The Tshwane metro is launching a community upliftment precinct (Cup) initiative to improve and maintain public infrastructure within residential, business and industrial areas.

The initiative will enable residents, businesses and communities to enter into a formal agreement to support the city in maintaining and improving service delivery.

The initiative was approved at the last council meeting on November 30.

“This is a major milestone that will enable communities to work together with the city in maintaining their neighbourhoods and surrounding spaces without unnecessary bureaucracy or barriers,” said Mayor Cilliers Brink.

Brink said after obtaining the necessary permission from the city, the community can plant flowers, cut grass, paint and repair pavements, patch potholes etc.

“It should be noted that the initiative is voluntary and not a transfer of our municipal functions to communities,” he said.

“The city will continue to render its normal municipal services, such as electricity supply, waste removal, water supply, sanitation, traffic policing, roads and street light maintenance.

“However, we do welcome and encourage all communities in our city to be part of our project that seeks to make our city work for all its residents.

“It is only through working together that we can achieve our collective goal of building a capital city that we can all be proud of.”

Communities that are interested in the initiative must consult their local councillor.

“We welcome all communities and organisations that want to support us in making our city work. Let us build Tshwane together,” said Cilliers.
