Hercules police are hunting two killers

Criminals do as they please in our community, says the local CPF.

Police have launched a manhunt for the two men who shot dead a young man on Sunday evening in Hercules.

Local CPF secretary Johan Cloete said the young man was shot three times in the head.

“These suspects robbed the young man of his cell phone before they shot him. Luckily, his brother managed to escape and went to the police station to report the incident.

“When police arrived on the scene, the victim was still alive, but later unfortunately succumbed to his injuries,” said Cloete.

He said the incident took place in Sarel Avenue in Lady Selborn, close to the Zandfontein Cemetery.

Cloete revealed that on Tuesday, Rassie Smith (69) was also shot dead on a smallholding in Niemandt Street, Andeon in the early hours of the morning.

Cloete said locals lived in fear because criminals acted with impunity.

“Crime is very high and these criminals do what they like – murder, steal and assault, they don’t care.”

He said the inaction of the police frustrated residents.

Attempts to get police comment were unsuccessful.

There has been an increase in murders in the Hercules area since the beginning of the festive season.

AfriForum revealed at a media briefing recently that of the 1 402 farm attacks and farm murders recorded by police in the four years from 2019 to 2022, only 66 cases had ended in convictions.

“This means that more than 95% of all these atrocities are still unsolved,” it said.
