Urban revival comes to Pretoria North

The urban revival campaign entails grass-cutting, pothole-filling, road-marking, fixing street lights and clearing illegal dumpsites such as the one on Daan de Wet Nel Drive.

Sections of Pretoria North recently got a facelift and were beautified after the introduction of the new urban revival campaign to address the visual appearance of the area.

The campaign started in Daan de Wet Nel Drive, which has been besieged by a lot of issues since the municipal workers’ three-month long illegal strike started, including illegal dumping, potholes, long grass, blocked drains and burst water pipes.

The metro and its partners recently implemented the new urban management plan, which includes attending to basic services such as grass-cutting, pothole-filling, road-marking, fixing street lights and clearing illegal dumpsites.

“This work forms part of the plan to gradually roll out our new urban management model, which seeks to identify and prioritise key major routes within the city, including public spaces such as parks and buildings,” said mayor Cilliers Brink.

Brink said the spot adjacent to the Dorandia garden refuse site has been a problem since the strike and the situation has worsened as people started dumping there illegally.

“With the help of the community and other stakeholders, we are erecting a fence to close off the area and clear it of illegally dumped rubbish so that the problem gets prevented.

“Criminals cut off the streetlights just for aluminium’s monetary value, however this causes a problem and burdens the already financially-strapped metro.”

Brink called on residents to work hand in glove with the Tshwane metro police (TMPD).

“We need to build relationships and partnerships between the community and the TMPD to act against those who cut off streetlights and those dumping illegally in Daan de Wet Nel Drive.

Brink acknowledged that cleaning, repairing and clearing up won’t solve all problems, but residents abiding by the law will.

He said the city would continue to work to improve the area in bringing it back to its former standard.
