Mamelodi Sundowns extend PSL record after 11th consecutive win

Sundowns will now turn their focus on the continental football to face Egyptian giants Pyramids on Tuesday December 19 in Egypt.

Dominant Mamelodi Sundowns continued on their winning ways in the DStv Premiership clinching their 11th consecutive league victory on Wednesday night.

The Tshwane giants thrashed Western Cape outfit Cape Town Spurs 3-0 in a midweek thriller at Loftus Versfeld stadium.

The win stretched Masandawana’s lead at the summit of the table but unfortunately keeps Spurs rooted to the bottom, with only one victory under their belt.

Sundowns opened an eight-point lead at the summit despite their busy continental schedule resulting in them playing three fewer local games than their rivals.

Should they win their games in hand, the lead could grow to 17 points and firmly instal them as favourites to retain their league title.

Coach Rulani Mokwena has now taken points from every opponent he has faced in the league since taking over as sole head coach in October 2022.

Sipho Mbule, the chef master was back in the kitchen, cooking up his side’s victory with a goal in the 23th minute.

Five minutes later, centre-back Grant Kekana increased the advantage.

Both sides came back from the break with energy and zeal to win, however Sundowns held fort well to deny their opponents a route to goal.

But Peter Shalulile returned to scoring ways coming off the bench to put the final nail on the coffin of the Capetonians.

Shalulile has written his name in the PSL history books in amassing 111 goals to put himself only behind legendary Siyabonga Nomvethe in PSL all-time leading goalscorer charts of 123 goals.
