Tshwane opens bin replacement campaign

Santa could bring you a new bin for Christmas.

The Tshwane metro has embarked on a campaign to replace lost or stolen wheelie bins.

Affected residents are encouraged to apply for new wheelie bins through the normal procedure.

Ward 59 councillor Shaun Wilkinson told Rekord that all residents whose bin is lost or stolen can apply for a new one.

“If the bins that you pay for monthly are stolen or broken, you simply apply for a replacement. If you have an account, it is free of charge,” Wilkinson said.

He said the municipality had asked him to facilitate that all residents whose bin was stolen or damaged get a replacement for Christmas.

Many residents reported their bins stolen during the recent SA municipal workers union (Samwu) strike.

Groenkloof resident Mariah de Swart said her bin was stolen because she had to keep it in the street for an extended period waiting for a refuse removal service.

“Our bins are being stolen because we leave them in the street with the hope that one day the metro will empty them.

“One would be so fortunate to find their wheelie bin, as the situation has led to them being stolen,” she said.

The theft of bins is not only restricted to the east of Pretoria but spreads to the west where complaints about stolen bins have soared.

The application for a replacement must be accompanied by an affidavit with an explanation for the loss.

Tshwane said those who don’t receive a replacement post the application would have to visit their nearest customer care centre.
