Thunderstorm warning for Tshwane

The SA Weather Services advises residents to stay away from trees and switch off electrical appliances to stay safe during thunderstorms.

Tshwane residents are warned to be on high alert as the South African Weather Services (SAWS) has predicted severe thunderstorms for Gauteng.

While the warning of possible threats of localised flooding as well as damaging winds from the SAWS didn’t pinpoint the capital city specifically, residents are still urged to be vigilant.

“Possible development of severe thunderstorms, with 50% probability of rain on Wednesday afternoon,” said the weather service.

It expects these thunderstorms and showers to bring 100mm of rain in the next five days over eastern South Africa, including Gauteng, which could lead to localised flooding.

Mild temperatures are expected to persist for five days, starting from Wednesday, December 6, until Monday, December 11.

Pretoria is expected to be partly cloudy this afternoon, with showers and thundershowers in the evening.

There is a 30% chance of rain, amounting to 3mm, with a maximum temperature of 22ºC.

The weather service says on Thursday, there is 60% of rain probability in Pretoria, with temperatures rising from 16ºC to a maximum of 27ºC.

In the early hours and later in the afternoon, it is expecting showers, as well a thundershowers throughout the day.

Keeping safe during thunderstorms:

– When thunder roars, go indoors! Move from outdoors into a building or car with a roof.

– Pay attention to alerts and warnings.

– Avoid using electronic devices connected to an electrical outlet.

– Avoid running water.

– When driving and approaching flooded roadways, rather turn around than drive through it.

– Ensure your head- and brake lights are working properly.

– Make sure your tyres are in good condition.

– Don’t speed, avoid hard braking or sharp turns.

– Maintain a safe following distance, as this gives you time to react and avoid potentially dangerous situations.

– Ensure your windscreen wipers are in good condition and that you can see clearly while driving.

– Switch on your headlights, especially when natural light is low. This not only increases visibility but also alerts other drivers to your presence on the road.
