Swamped Magalieskruin garden refuse site remains temporarily closed

This site was closed on November 17 to clear the high volume of refuse and was supposed to be operational by December 4, but clearing of the backlog is running behind.

Magalieskruin Garden refuse site on Koorsboom Road in Sinoville remains temporarily closed due to its huge backlog.

The site was closed on November 17 and was expected to be operational again on Monday, December 4.

“However, due to the high volume of waste which accumulated on-site during the strike period, the site could not be cleared and all the backlog removed as planned,” said MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management Ziyanda Zwane.

Zwane said the site will now be opened on Monday, December 11.

He said residents must note that almost all the garden sites are currently overwhelmed as a result of the illegal strike.

“Residents are therefore requested to use nearby landfill sites during this period to assist the process of clearing the backlog,” Zwane said.

Operational landfill sites include:
– Bronkhorstspruit landfill site located on Zithobeni Road, Bronkhorstspruit
– Ga-Rankuwa landfill site located on Molefe Makinta Road, Ga-Rankuwa
– Soshanguve landfill site located at the corner of Molefe Makinta and Soutpan Road, Soshanguve
– Heatherley landfill site located on Solomon Mahlangu Drive, Nellmapius, Mamelodi.

Zwane urged residents and clients to refrain from dumping waste on the perimeters of these sites as this is regarded as illegal dumping activity which contravenes the Tshwane Waste Management By-law.

“The penalty for illegal dumping as per the Waste Management By-law is R5 000.”
