Pretoria Central Station among SA’s top 30 plagued by serious crime

Tshwane stations plagued by serious crime also include Akasia, Lyttleton and Brooklyn police stations.

Pretoria Central police station is one of four stations in Tshwane that have made the list of the top 30 plagued by serious crime nationwide.

This was revealed in the second quarter national crime statistics released on Friday November 17.

The statistics are taken from cases reported to and detected by police between July 1 and September 30.

The other Tshwane stations in the list include Akasia, Lyttelton and Brooklyn.

Pretoria Central

Contact crimes increased by 5.8%, with robbery with aggravating circumstances increasing by 16.5% from 139 cases in 2022 to 162.

Common assaults increased by 19.7% from 122 in 2022 to 146. Common robberies decreased from 128 to 126 cases (-1.6%) and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) decreased by 5.7% from 87 down to 82 cases.

Murder cases decreased by three from six to three, sexual offences by four from 26 to 22 and attempted murder by three from six to three.

Five fewer rape cases were reported this quarter (22 down to 17) while no contact sexual offences were reported from one last year.

No attempted sexual offence was recorded this quarter and two more sexual assault cases were reported this quarter from three to five.

Central motorists are cautioned to be wary of their surroundings, as car hijacking cases have increased by 14 counts this quarter (six up to 20 cases).

No trio crimes (robbery of cash-in-transit, bank robberies and truck hijackings) were reported this quarter or for the previous quarter.

No robberies at residential premises were reported for this quarter or the previous quarter, and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by 14 counts (24 down to 10 cases).

Contact-related crimes decreased by 15.9% in total. Malicious damage to property cases decreased by 16.3% (86 down to 72 cases) and two cases of arson were reported in this quarter, as with the previous quarter.

With property-related crimes, burglary at a residential premises cases increased by nine counts (24 up to 32 cases) and burglary at a non-residential premise increased by four counts (14 up to 18 cases)

Theft out of or from a motor vehicle cases reported increased by 7.9% (241 cases up to 261) and no stock theft incidents have been reported in the past five quarters. Theft of a motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by 37.6% (85 down to 53).

Other serious crimes decreased by 13%, with all other thefts not mentioned elsewhere decreasing by 5.8% (318 cases to 300). Commercial crime decreased by 30.6% (180 down to 125 cases) and shoplifting cases decreased by 6.7% (134 down to 125 cases).

Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 14.1% with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol cases detected increasing by 43.2% (37 up to 53 cases).

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition cases detected increased by three counts (10 cases down to seven).

Drug-related crimes detected increased by 8.6% (116 up to 126) and no sexual offences were detected as a result of police action in the past five quarters.

Finally, kidnappings increased by six counts from the past 10 cases in the previous quarter to 16 cases reported in this one.

Sunnyside

Contact crimes for the Sunnyside police station this quarter total saw a decrease of 9.4%, with robbery with aggravating circumstances decreasing by 7.3% (from 206 cases down to 191).

Common assault cases decreased by 23.3% (150 cases down to 115) and five fewer murder cases were reported this quarter compared to the nine reported in the last.

Sexual offence cases reported decreased by nine counts (29 down to 20 cases) and assault with GBH decreased by four counts (seven cases down to three).

15 rape cases were reported this quarter compared to the 20 reported in the last. One attempted sexual offence was reported for the first time in five quarters.

Four fewer sexual assault cases were reported this quarter (eight cases down to four) and no contact sexual offences were reported this quarter compared to the one reported in the previous quarter.

Carjackings (24 up to 39 cases) and robberies at residential premises (nine up to 24 cases) both saw increases of 15 counts each.

Robberies at non-residential premises decreased by eight counts (18 down to 10 cases).

No Trio crimes have been reported in the past five quarters.

Contact-related crimes saw an increases of 6.4% in total, with malicious damage to property cases increasing by 47 cases to 50 and no arson cases being reported in the past five quarters.

Property-related crimes decreased by 1%, with burglary at a residential premises cases increasing by 115.4% (26 up to 56 cases) and burglary at a non-residential premise decreased by nine counts (18 down to nine cases).

Theft of a motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by 33.1% (127 down to 85) and theft out of or from a motor vehicle cases reported increased by 7.5% (228 cases up to 245). No stock theft cases have been reported in the past five quarters.

Other serious crimes saw a decrease of 20.3% with 26 fewer cases of shoplifting being reported this quarter (73 cases down to 47).

All other theft not mentioned elsewhere had decreased by 26.6% (364 down to 267 cases) and commercial crime increased by 7.2% (125 up to 134 cases).

Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 46.9%. Drug-related crimes increased by 45% (80 up to 116 cases detected) and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol cases detected increased by 35.1% (97 up to 131 cases).

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition cases detected increased by four counts (three cases to seven) and sexual offences detected as a result of police action increased by 17 counts (14 offences detected up to 31). Nine more kidnapping cases were reported in this quarter compared to the 17 reported in the last.
