North police in a manhunt for five after farm attack

Farm communities are urged to organise themselves to deal with farm attacks.

Pretoria North police are searching for five men in connection with a robbery on an Onderstepoort farm.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said a couple cleaning a pigpen was accosted by the perpetrators.

“One hit them with a firearm, shoving them into the pigpen – three robbers had firearms,” Van Dyk said.

“The farm owner later identified two as his employees.”

He said the victims were tied up then robbed of their belongings.

“They took their cellphone, electric appliances and two vehicles – a Ford Ranger and Ford Bantam – then transferred R75 000 out of their victims’ account.”

Van Dyk said all the suspects are known and foreign nationals.

Police have not yet determined the value of all the stolen goods.

He said the ongoing investigation team includes the forensic department.

Farm attacks have been a major issue in the country and among farmers in general.

According to the AfriForum 2022 annual farm murder report, farm attacks remained high while arrests and trust in police were at an all-time low.

The organisation expressed concern that only 33% of murder suspects were arrested in 2022. The report also revealed that farm attacks decreased from 415 and 55 murders in 2021 to 333 and 50 murders in 2022.

AfriForum urged farmers and the public to establish security structures and become actively involved in the safety of their communities.

It said it already had about 160 neighbourhood watch structures nationwide and offered safety training to farmers.
