Tree planting programme to create more than 20 jobs for Ga-Rankuwa residents

The project creates jobs through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

More than 20 jobs will be created for the Ga-Rankuwa community following the launch of a tree planting programme.

The programme has been created thanks to the City of Tshwane and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.

It forms part of the much larger 10 000-tree planting national programme, where the aim is to plant at least two million trees every year over five years.

MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management Ziyanda Zwane said the aim of the project was to attain environmental sustainability and protection, and to realise socio-economic benefits.

He said at least 2 000 Mangifera indica, commonly known as mango trees, will be planted in Ga-Rankuwa Zone 10, 20 and 24, a predominantly low-cost housing area.

“Mango trees are known to grow well in tropical and subtropical climates, which renders Ga-Rankuwa a suitable climatic area,” Zwane said.

He said not only was the project offering environmental benefits but it created jobs through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

“During the implementation of the project, 25 job opportunities will be created for a period of 22 days and these opportunities will benefit the communities of Ga-Rankuwa Zone 10, 20 and 24.”

He believed the project would contribute to the maintenance and integrity of the environment. It will also play a significant role in biodiversity conservation, social food security and the physical well-being of the people living in Ga-Rankuwa.
