NEWSFLASH: Wapadrand liquor store robbed, guard shot

Police say five 9mm live rounds, magazine spring and cover were found at the scene, including a rifle cartridge found outside the store.

Garsfontein police are on the hunt for four men who wounded a security officer while committing a business robbery in Wapadrand, east of Pretoria on Thursday, October 26.

The robbery at the liquor store at Wapadrand centre, on the corner of Wapadrand and Lynnwood roads, occurred around closing time 20:00.

The store was ambushed by two suspects, while another two sat guard outside, according to preliminary reports.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said an undisclosed amount of money, and liquor valued at over R50 000 were forcefully taken and as a result, a charge of business robbery and attempted murder were lodged.

Van Dyk said according to preliminary information, a liquor store employee alleged that while preparing to close, two men robbed her and the store manager at gunpoint.

“They were instructed to open a cash till. She told them she doesn’t have access.”

He said other employees were instructed to lie down.

“The suspects hit the glass cabinet used to store expensive liquor with the back of the firearm and it discharged a bullet that hit the ceiling.”

He said a security officer was later shot.

“The guard was shot at by the two suspects standing guard outside.

“According to the guard, the suspects fired two shots at him, one went through the bakkie canopy and the other the driver’s door and his right boot. Luckily, he didn’t sustain injury.”

Van Dyk said five 9mm live rounds, a magazine spring and cover as well as a rifle cartridge were found on the scene.

The suspects reportedly drove a white Hyundai sedan with an unknown registration towards Mamelodi.

“The suspects are unknown and no arrest has been made. All leads and information are being investigated.”
