Residents in east suburb band together to clean up after protest

The protest, a bid to voice local concerns over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was followed by reports of littering and vandalism.

Residents in Lynnwood, Pretoria, were left picking up the pieces in their area following protest action on Friday afternoon.

This did not stop them from cleaning their area and even coming together again on Saturday to paint a mural in support of the South African rugby team on a wall that had been vandalised.
On Friday afternoon, protesters marched between Duxbury and Rodericks roads in the east of Pretoria to voice their concerns over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

It is reported that protesters threw red paint on the road and used the paint to vandalise a wall in the area. Pictures of litter strewn across the road were also shared on social media.

According to local ward councillor, Siobhan Muller, the protesters left “a mess behind” but the community decided to clean the area themselves. “They [the protesters] threw trash around, and the children of residents in the area were afraid of what had been painted on the wall,” Muller said. “Parents in the area decided to turn it into something good. On Friday, they picked up the trash and painted the wall white.”

Muller said the community again gathered in the area on Saturday morning to create a mural in support of the Springbok rugby team, set to play in the World Cup semi-final against England this evening.” She added that the community had taken a negative action and turned it into a positive, which is something that was needed in Pretoria.
