Mamelodi West police celebrate their heritage

The Heritage Day celebration was also to motivate the members to celebrate themselves for who they are and where they come from.

Mamelodi West police took some time out to celebrate their cultural roots and heritage on Friday to commemorate Heritage Day.

Police alongside the local CPF, Siyabangena and Moses Mobhida Foundation celebrated together through traditional food, music, dance and poetry.

There was an added incentive – the best dresser competition.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Daphney Maila said the Heritage Day celebration also honoured post-promotion quests and farewell function for three dedicated officers’ appointment or retirement in August.

She said the three members going on retirement were Captain Ngwanduli, Captain Kekae and Warrant Officer Semenya.

“The celebration was also to motivate officers to celebrate themselves for who they are and where they come from,” said Maila.

“All the time they are out there serving our communities without having time to celebrate themselves,” she said.

She added that it was the right opportunity for them to celebrate their own cultures and remember where they come from.

Mamelodi police station commander, Brigadier Kervin Deslin Solomons applauded the event organising team for its good work.

Maila said the celebration also honoured the best male and female cultural attire as well as Afrikaner, Ndebele, Swati, Tsonga, and Pedi cultural displays.

Police station managers adjudicated the best dresser and display competitions. The winners walked away with trophies and shopping vouchers.

The celebration aimed to embrace different cultures, and diversity and learn from each other.

“It was an opportunity to also mingle and understand different cultures. Hence we have asked the members to proudly wear their traditional clothes,” said Maila.

The event was held at the station.
