Weather service warns of another severe storm

“Expect localised damage to informal houses over an open area. There will be falling of trees, blocking of minor roads, as well as flying debris that might result in injuries.”

The South African weather service (Saws) has issued a level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms expected to hit Tshwane and surrounding areas today.

According to Saws, this level is expected to come with strong winds, which can cause a lot of damage, and are also expected to be in the extreme south-western parts of Limpopo and western Mpumalanga.

“Expect localised damage to informal houses over an open area. There will be falling of trees, blocking of minor roads, as well as flying debris that might result in injuries,” the agency said.

According to Saws, the cut-off lows are notorious for causing widespread severe weather such as flooding, heavy rainfall, and severe thunderstorms.

“Widespread showers and thundershowers can be expected across western, central and southern South Africa, particularly from Sunday onwards.”

Meanwhile, the weather for Monday is expected to be mostly partly cloudy with 30% humidity and showers and thundershowers.

The minimum temperature of 12° C and maximum of 28° C with a rain probability of 30%, is expected.

Last week, the city experienced a huge storm that resulted in the uprooting of trees in various parts of the metro.

At the time, Tshwane emergency spokesperson Charles Mabaso said no casualties were reported.

Saws forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobelo told Rekord that last week’s wind speed was 28 knots approximately 60km/h.

Thobelo said such wind speeds were normal with thunderstorms.

The service had warned residents of what it called the first spring thunderstorms.
