Tshwane to priotise repair of water leaks

“Residents are thus urged to join in our effort by reporting leaks, conserving water, and supporting our initiatives to ensure a sustainable water supply for future generations.”

The Tshwane municipality has pledged to prioritise the repair of water pipe leaks in the city.

Utilities MMC Themba Fosi said the metro appreciates its responsibility of providing a reliable supply of water and safeguarding it as it was a scarce commodity.

“In recent months, the city identified and prioritised the repair of water leaks as a primary concern. The city recognises that addressing water leaks is a vital step in securing the provision of clean and safe drinking water for all our residents,” Fosi said.

“We understand residents’ frustrations when it comes to unattended water leaks.

Residents are thus urged to join in our effort by reporting leaks, conserving water, and supporting our initiatives to ensure a sustainable water supply for future generations.”

Rand Water and the metro recently had a spat over blame for the low water supply Tshwane residents were subjected to.

Both took to social media, effectively blaming each other.

The city claimed Rand Water was responsible for the water supply problems, adding there wasn’t sufficient capacity in the reservoirs because of low-pressure problems.

In response, Rand Water said the city had exceeded its water target and was refusing to impose restrictions or communicate water conservation messages.

Both parties have since apologised to residents for their part in poor water supply to residents.

Meanwhile, the municipality shared some of the consequences of not conserving water:

– frequent water leaks lead to interruptions in the supply to homes and businesses, causing inconvenience and disruptions to daily life.

– increased water bills for residents, contribute to households’ financial strain.

– damage is caused to roads, buildings, and other infrastructure, leading to costly repairs and maintenance.

– the wasted water has environmental implications, including the depletion of water resources and increased energy consumption for water treatment.

The metro is taking the following proactive measures to address water leaks:

– Increased maintenance: “We are ramping up efforts to identify and repair leaks promptly by investing in maintenance and infrastructure improvement projects.”

– Community reporting: The city encourages residents to report suspected water leaks.

– Public awareness campaigns to educate residents about the importance of water conservation.

– Collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including local communities, to raise awareness

– Emergency response: In case of major leaks or infrastructure damage, emergency response teams are readily available to minimise disruption.
