A man’s charred body was found in the middle of a road in Maude Park, Atteridgeville not far from Phatogeng primary school on Friday, September 1.
The man was suspected of earlier killing two women found dead in Lotus Garden in the west of Pretoria on Wednesday, one of whom his girlfriend.
However, it is still unclear how they were killed and their identity remains unconfirmed.
Gauteng emergency medical services (EMS) spokesperson Annikie Lelaka said it was suspected the man fled after killing the two women in Lotus Gardens.
She said the community later spotted him around Atteridgeville, chased him down and caught him and set him alight.
“Even SAPS could not stop the community from burning him.”
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said a murder case was being investigated.
The age of the man was not yet confirmed, he added.
“Police are following up on information. The detectives are investigating the allegations that he is involved in other crimes.”
“The detectives are investigating leads that have been received, however, no definite suspects are apprehended at this stage.”
Lelaka said paramedics responded to a call from Atteridgeville at 15:30 and when emergency responders arrived at the scene, they drove up to a group of people among whom were police.
“The SAPS then stopped them and requested for declaration assistance from the EMS team.
She said the man was burnt beyond recognition and declared dead on the scene.”
