Metro blames Samwu strike for closure of Akasia, Pretoria North libraries

Resident Salomi Louw believes that it is unacceptable for the libraries to be closed without prior notice or any information provided to the public. She has pointed out that even the Tshwane website is lacking information about the closures.

The Tshwane metro has attributed the continued closure of public libraries in the north to the ongoing strike.

Library users have been particularly affected as they have been unable to access the resources and facilities they need.

As the Samwu strike entered its fourth week, the disruption of public services in Tshwane caused significant inconvenience for residents who rely on these services.

The Akasia and Pretoria North libraries have been closed for more than three weeks.

Resident Salomi Louw has expressed her frustration with the prolonged closure of Akasia library

Louw believes that it is unacceptable for the libraries to be closed without prior notice or any information provided to the public.

She has pointed out that even the Tshwane website is lacking information about the closures.

“The city should at least clarify this situation so that residents can once again access the valuable resources provided by libraries,” she said.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said: “We understand the frustration felt by residents who rely on these services, and we are working to resolve the situation as soon as possible.”

Mashigo said not only library services were disrupted by the strike but all other services are.

He said the illegal and unprotected labour strike has made impossible for the city to offer some of the services due to acts of intimidation.

“We ask for the patience and understanding of the residents during this difficult time.”
