Metro police bust drugs worth R500 000 in Hammanskraal

Suspects used a local bakery as a front for their drug business

The Tshwane Metro Police Department Drug Unit arrested four suspects for being in possession of crystal meth, heroin and cat early in the week.

The four suspects were arrested in the Hammanskraal area.

MMC for Community safety, Grandi Theunissen, said the drugs were valued at more than R500 000.

“The suspects are currently detained at the Hammanskraal and Temba police stations,” he said.

“After receiving a tipoff, the drug unit conducted an operation and went to the reported address,” he added.

According to the MMC, upon arrival the Metro police discovered that the suspects were using a bakery as a front to package drugs.

“While they were there, the owner arrived with crystal meth that needed to be packaged.
The drug unit members searched him and found more drugs in his vehicle.”

Theunissen thanked the drug unit team for their swift response and continuous efforts in trying to root out drugs in the city.

“As the MMC for Community Safety, I want to thank and applaud the members of the drug unit for their continued efforts to rid our streets of the scourge of drugs.

“Many communities in Tshwane face a daily struggle with the crippling effects that these substances have on their users, who are often the young and vulnerable,” the MMC said.
