Metro closes Rooihuiskraal garden refuse dumpsite temporarily

Residents were given alternative refuse sites to use.

The Rooihuiskraal garden refuse site will be closed from October 6 to 9 for “much-needed” maintenance, according to the Tshwane metro.

Residents were advised to use the refuse site in Kruger Avenue, Centurion or Menlo Park on 26th Avenue instead.

Environment and agriculture management MMC Katlego Mathebe said the temporary closure was necessary at this stage as the rainy season was approaching.

She emphasised the importance of maintaining the site as it tends to be busy during this period, adding that the site rapidly filled up.

“Garden refuse sites serve as transfer stations for garden waste that is then shredded before being taken to landfill sites. While the City works towards improving the removal of green waste from this site, we advise our residents to use the alternative garden refuse sites,” Mathebe said.

During delays in refuse collection last month, frustrated residents illegally dumped trash along the roads in open fields outside dump sites.

The delays were caused by wage disagreements between the city and waste collectors.

Former metro head administrator, Mpho Nawa, previously warned residents that harsh action would be taken against anyone who dumped trash illegally.

“The city understands the frustration of residents whose rubbish had not been collected, but this constitutes an infringement of city by-laws,” he said at the time.
