UPDATE: R21 open for traffic, motorists urged to drive with caution

Motorists are, however, advised to drive with caution as the area was regarded as a "no-go area" earlier today.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) has confirmed that the R21 highway towards and around Tembisa is safe and open for traffic.

This was after Tembisa residents protested on Monday morning, blocking roads to have their demands met.

EMPD spokesperson Lebogang Thepa said the R21 is open for traffic travelling in both directions.

Motorists are, however, advised to stay vigilant on the R21 highway as it was regarded as a “no-go area” only this morning.

Residents protested against Ekurhuleni metro rates increases.

Reports also say the community was upset after the mayor failed to show up for a community meeting.
