Tshwane police trainer arrested for alleged trainee rape

The Tshwane SAPS Academy sergeant (45) was arrested on July 19 for allegedly raping a female trainee at the Tshwane police academy in Rebecca Street, west of Pretoria.

Police have instituted internal disciplinary processes against a 45-year-old police trainer accused of raping a 25-year-old trainee.

The police sergeant (45) was arrested on July 19 at the Tshwane police academy in Rebecca Street, west of Pretoria and is believed to already have appeared in court.

Investigations are ongoing.

Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said police had instituted internal disciplinary processes according to the SAPS 2016 disciplinary regulations.

“The SAPS confirms that the officer is attached to the Tshwane SAPS academy and was arrested on July 19.”

She said the policeman was still in police custody.

“The management of the SAPS has condemned the incident and is currently providing the trainee with psychosocial services and other necessary support.”

The trainee is believed to be part of the police’s latest drive to recruit and train over 12 000 new officers to ensure that the SAPS urgently receive the capacity it needs to strengthen and reinforce crime-fighting initiatives at the grassroots level of law enforcement.

Earlier this year, minister Bheki Cele flagged an increase in sexual offences in the country.

“In the first three months of this year, 10 818 people were raped in South Africa.”

“Almost half of the cases, a staggering 4 653 rapes took place at the home of the victim or the rapist.”

Cele said that other common areas for rape were public parks, beaches, streets, open fields, parking areas and abandoned buildings.
