Cops nab suspects in CBD salon robbery

The two allegedly robbed the staff and patrons of cellphones estimated at R15 000.

Police arrested two men for allegedly robbing a salon and its customers at gunpoint on Monday, July 11.

The two reportedly stormed into a salon on Pretorius Street and robbed the patrons and staff of their cellphones, said police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

Nkhumise said the men, aged 33 and 43, fled the scene with cellphones estimated to be worth R15 000.

“Soon after the robbery, community members stopped a police patrol vehicle spotted in the area and alerted the police about the robbery,” he said.

“The community members described the car driven by the robbers and a swift operation was launched to find the suspects.”

He said the police located the suspects’ white VW Polo.

“Upon searching the car, police found an unlicensed firearm with live ammunition and cellphones estimated to be worth R15 000,” Nkhumise said.

“The suspects were arrested and charged with two counts of business robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of stolen cellphones.”

Acting station commander Colonel Phil Maboea applauded the crime prevention team members for a job well done and the community for assisting the police.

The two suspects are expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.
