Akasia police officers blow off steam

“It helps them ease the tension because a third party, who is not from the station, can identify issues that would require them to see a psychologist.”

Fifty Akasia police station officers got a chance to blow off some steam, thanks to a stress-relieving session organised by their employee health and wellness official.

The officers were delighted to be given this opportunity to share the challenges they face every day in a safe and professional environment during the session.

Social worker Warrant Officer Msumba arranged for a therapist to come to the station to render massages and interview officers on their daily challenges.

Akasia SAPS spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mabasa said such sessions were important for police officers because they dealt with trauma daily.

“It helps them to ease the tension because a third party, who is not from the station, can identify issues that would require them to see a psychologist,” said Mabasa.

“This will also help reduce the suicide rate within the police force and violence associated with the police. People deal with trauma differently and these sessions do help.”

The station’s management welcomed this initiative and emphasised its importance given the circumstances under which the men and women in blue work.
