March to disrupt traffic in the city centre

Former Tshwane Metro Waste Management contract employees will march to the National Treasury and labour department on Tuesday.

The Tshwane metro police have announced that former Tshwane Metro Waste Management contract employees will embark on a protest today (Tuesday) that will cause traffic disruption to several streets in the city centre.

The streets to be affected include:

  • Kgosi Mampuru
  • Sophie de Bruyn
  • Bosman
  • Paul Kruger
  • Thabo Sehume
  • Helen Joseph
  • Pretorius
  • Francis Baard

They advised motorists to avoid affected streets and use alternative routes, including Nana Sita, Struben, Lilian Ngoyi and Sisulu.

“Tshwane metro police officers will be deployed to monitor the march,” the statement reads.

The former waste management contract employees said the purpose of the march was to force the metro to re-employ them, saying they had won a case against the City to be reinstated.

According to the metro police statement, the march is the result of the City’s refusal to implement an alleged court order.

The disgruntled former contract workers are, therefore, set to take the matter to the National Treasury and the labour department to force the city to implement the alleged court order and comply with the Labour Relations Act.

The protesters are expected to gather at the corner of Madiba and Kgosi Mampuru streets from 10:00.
