Resident spends thousands on the homeless

“I don’t think my words are enough to express my sincere appreciation for the donation. In short, I am speechless,” says an emotional beneficiary.

Pretoria resident Donald Kubayi has opted to make a difference in society by spending around R4 000 every month to feed the poor every weekend in the Pretoria Moot area.

Kubayi, who is a member of Word of Life Ministries International, feeds around 30 homeless people living at an abandoned building on the corner of Hertzog Street and Steve Biko Road.

He has been doing the charity work from his own pocket since January this year with no intention of having his good work published all over.

When Rekord visited him, he was busy feeding the needy on Sunday. Kubayi said he was doing it out of love for people not to receive glory for what he was doing for the community.

“I am helping my brothers and sisters to access healthy meals. Their satisfaction makes me happy,” the humble Kubayi said, citing that he was inspired by the love he has for the people.

He said his love for the homeless and the needy began in 2001 when he was one of the volunteer church members who were feeding the poor at the Union Buildings.

“Since 2001, the feeling of supporting the poor has never left me.”

He was alone on Sunday but said he often delivers food with his wife and children.

He said buying in bulk monthly helped him have enough stock for the month.

“I cook the meal myself or sometimes with my wife and children.”

The meal he delivered on Sunday consisted of cooked rice, a delicious chicken curry stew as well as well-prepared vegetables.

Beneficiary Tshepo Ramarumo said he appreciated the meals from this good Samaritan.

“Every weekend is special to us homeless people. We eat decent and delicious meals,” Ramarumo said.

“I don’t think my words could be enough to express my sincere appreciation for the donation. In short, I am speechless.”

He said Kubayi made them enjoy life again at a time when some of them had given up.

Kubayi also helped those who have lost their identity documents to get new ones from the Department of Home Affairs.

He is currently working to help those with skills find some piecework.

“I sometimes hire them to do my garden and pay them.”

He said while it was important to give them food he also believes that allowing them to work and help stand on their own feet was essential.

He urged interested residents to join him by either donating food parcels or non-perishable goods.

“When you give to people who are less fortunate, God remembers and blesses you.”
