Actor Sibusiso Khwinana murderer’s case postponed

The then 25-year-old, who starred in the popular Matwetwe movie 'Lefa', was stabbed to death in a robbery in March 2019.

The sentencing of Julius Lucas, who was found guilty of the murder of actor Sibusiso Khwinana last month, was postponed in the North Gauteng High Court on Monday.

This was because Swahili-speaking translator was not available.

The translator was said to have been attending a three-week course out of the Gauteng province and would only be available next month.

Judge Portia Phahlane ruled that the matter be postponed to April 20, 2022.

Julius Lucas was found guilty found murdering Sibusiso Khwinana in March 2019.

Speaking to the media outside court, the Matwetwe lead actor’s uncle Benjamin Khwinana expressed disappointment in the postponement of the matter, adding that they hoped Monday would have been the last day so that they could “move on” from what happened to the then 25-year-old.

“Hopefully on the 20th of April everything will go accordingly and we’ll be able to move on,” he said.

Lucas (36) was found guilty of killing Sibusiso, back in 2019, last month.

He was also found guilty on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and contravening the Immigration Act.

The actor’s uncle said the family was happy with the verdict.

“Even though he didn’t admit to the murder, at least we have the confirmation that he is guilty and we are waiting for the sentencing,” he said.

Khwinana, who starred in the popular movie as Lefa, was allegedly stabbed to death in a robbery at the corner of Pretorius and Steve Biko streets in March 2019.

Khwinana and Lucas allegedly wrestled for the phone, before Lucas stabbed him with a sharp object in his upper body.

Khwinana and his friend were understood to have been attending a screening of the movie before the fatal robbery occurred.
