Sunnyside police and CPF operation leads to arrests

Sunnyside police say new CPF has strengthened their ability to fight crime.

Sunnyside police have commended the newly elected Sunnyside Community Policing Forum (CPF) committee for doing what they described as sterling work in the fight against crime in the policing precinct.

The police successfully arrested 53 undocumented immigrants in an intelligent driven joint operation to combat crime in the area last week.

“As the police, we feel our hand has been strengthened by the formation of the new Sunnyside CPF committee,” police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said.

He said the CPF’s partnership with the police gave them an advantage in their endeavours to prevent, combat and investigate crimes.

“We are expressing our gratitude to the community for providing information that helps the police fight against crime,” he said.

He said seeing an improvement in the fight against crime, as a result of a good working relationship between the police and the CPF, gave them confidence.

Mavimbela explained that, other than the CPF, the integrated operation also included the Gauteng traffic police.

While the police conducted a stop-and-search looking for things such as dangerous weapons, drugs and unlicenced firearms, the traffic police checked if motorists were complying with the traffic laws, he said.

The police promised to continue with operations to keep the residents of the city safe.

“Police operations are ongoing and most of them are integrated,” Mavimbela said.

He said every week police hold operations such as O Kae Molao, meaning where is the law and a safer intercity.

CPF chairperson Sandile Dube said the CPF welcomed the arrests of undocumented immigrants.

“Illegal immigrants is one of the issues that Sunnyside residents are often complaining about.”

He said the arrests meant the police were working on solving the problem.

“We appreciate a good relationship that the Sunnyside police have with the CPF.”
