Mall tenants plough back into the community

The school had more than 1 500 enrolled scholars, the majority coming from poverty-stricken households.

A total of 165 learners from Mogale primary school have every reason to go to school now after receiving school essentials.

The learners received the much-needed donations of school necessities, including uniforms, shoes, bags, stationery, food for the feeding scheme project, girls’ hygiene products, and other essentials to help make the learning environment at the school bearable.

The items were donated on Friday, January 28 by the management of Mams mall and the tenants who came together to offer relief to the 165 learners in need of school essentials.

Mall marketing manager, Nthabiseng Moremela said the school had more than 1 500 enrolled scholars, the majority coming from poverty-stricken households.

Most learners reside at the informal settlement of Phomolong, about 3.3km from the mall.

“This gesture comes just in time for the commencement of the new academic year and served to inspire learners to only focus on acquiring knowledge and not worry about uniforms or other necessities,” said Moremela.

Educator and co-ordinator of school support-based team, Violet Masango said the teachers helped to identify the needy learners.

“We are very much grateful for the generous donations. It will help the learners to focus on school and most importantly build and boost their self-esteem,” said Masango.

Chairperson of the school governing body, Abel Nkuna encouraged the learners to focus on their school work.

Nkuna said the learners should not forget where they come from since one of the donors was once a learner at the school.

School principal, Sivuyile Twaise said they started identifying grade 1 to 7 learners who were coming from poor backgrounds.

“We appreciate the donation of school uniforms and food because there are learners who come to school with empty stomaches. At least 80% of our learners come from informal settlements and they are ones who are suffering the most,” said Twaise.

The learners were happy with school uniforms and goodies they received and vowed to work hard at school.
