Lyttelton learners protest because they cannot start matric

"We intervened and dispatched officials to the school and managed to bring calm and order to the school."

Matric learners at a local high school protested peacefully in Centurion last Friday.

According to the learners of Lyttleton Manor high school, the teachers and the school “didn’t have proper supplies to teach with”.

Learners wanted “all grades without textbooks to get textbooks”.

They said these included grades 11 and 12 life science, all senior accounting and CAT textbooks, among others.

Learners also claimed those studying CAT and life science were without teachers.

They said hygiene issues also need to be addressed as soon as possible in respect of the girls and boys ablution facilities.

Another demand was that their timetables be finalised.

The learners showed up in school uniforms, but wore black T-shirts inside the school. They sat in front of the offices. No teachers were involved in the protest.

Gauteng education department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department was aware of the protest at the school.

“Subsequently, we intervened and dispatched officials to the school and managed to bring calm and order to the school.

“Currently, the school is optimally functioning, and we were there since Monday morning to monitor the situation.

“We can confirm that the teachers that left were school governing board employed teachers, and the board is currently interviewing and finalising the appointments at the school.”

He said classes did have timetables but after the 10th school day, the timetables had to be reviewed.

“The SGB had a meeting today to finalise the outstanding procurement processes.”

Mabona said the department had an engagement on Friday with the Representatives Council of learners, received their memorandum and listened to their grievances.

“We submitted and compiled a management plan with due dates to address the issues raised.”

“The circuit manager and the institutional development and support official (IDSO) is attending a school management team meeting on Monday.

A follow-up meeting with the school governing board learner representatives, district director and circuit manager and IDSO and head office officials will take place on February 4, to check the process on the issues raised.”
