Wonderboompoort police discourage violence against women and children

Residents are urged to report to the police domestic violence cases early to prevent them from developing into undesirable situations later, when left unreported.

Wonderboompoort police together with various organisations embarked on a campaign to highlight the dangers of gender-based violence (GBV) in Pretoria Moot and the surroundings.

The men and women in blue hosted the campaign at the Mayville shopping centre on Thursday, to commemorate the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children, together with the Department of Community Safety and the Kopano Manyano NGO.

Police said the event was aimed to putting their effort into making residents aware of various forms of GBV plaguing the country, and steps that could be followed to fight against it.

“We want to make it clear that perpetrators of various forms of violence against women and children will be arrested,” Wonderboompoort police spokesperson Constable Mandlakayise Zwane said.

He said their message was not only about arresting perpetrators to fight against GBV, but also to prevent violence against women and children from recurring.

“One way of preventing women and children abuse is to empower potential victims and the entire residents with the knowledge that would help them detect cases of abuse early and report them to the police before they escalate, sometimes to a point of loss of life.”

Zwane said community members were given information about all forms of abuse and further encouraged to join hands with the police and report all forms of crimes.

“They were further urged to help the police to fight against domestic violence cases as such cases take place behind closed doors.”

He said the shoppers were encouraged to call the crime stop line on 08600 10111 to report incidents of GBV.

“At the event, all Covid-19 protocols were observed.”
