Newly elected ward 81 councillor calls for focus on Sunnyside issues this festive season

You should be aware that life does not end during the festive season but continues beyond it, says new ward councillor.

The newly elected Sunnyside ward 81 councillor Mpho Lewele has urged residents not to forget the important issues this festive season, including Covid-19 and crime.

“Now is the time to start enjoying the festive season,” he said.

“However, neglecting issues such as high unemployment, Covid-19 and crime does not help us in alleviating their effects on our lives and those of our loved ones.

“In relation to a high rate of unemployment, which according to the Statistics South Africa is now shocking at 34.9%, the youth unemployment is a pandemic on its own that requires a special attention from the young people,” Lewele said.

“This problem requires the youth to stand up and look for possible solutions to turn things around.

“I urge the youth in Sunnyside and surroundings to consider being entrepreneurs and employers rather than mostly focusing on becoming job seekers and employees. Our area and the entire country need people to come up with innovative ideas that will bring change. We need entrepreneurs to create job opportunities and develop our economy.

“You should not only rely on government for assistance but use your own talents and skills to bring solutions to the current problems.”

Lewele said given issues around Covid-19, residents should adhere to regulations and also keep in mind that HIV is still another pandemic that has destroyed many lives as well.

“I urge people to protect themselves from these two diseases,” he said.

“The festive season is time to celebrate. Don’t be negligent and end up committing mistakes that would have serious implications on lives. You should be aware that life does not end during the festive season but continues beyond it. Do not drink and drive or violate other traffic laws but be vigilant and be careful. Do not abuse alcohol.

“Lastly, scams are on the rise during the festive season. Please be aware of them and report suspicious people to the police.”
