Progress at the Mooikloof substation

“A comprehensive project plan with key deliverables and milestones is being implemented so that we restore power to the affected areas as quickly as possible.”

Tshwane employees have started construction and repair at the Mooikloof substation following a fire that damaged the building.

A fire broke out on Wednesday, burning down key equipment leading to a power outage at several suburbs in the East of Pretoria.

In a statement, the metro’s spokesperson Hilgard Matthews said the utility services department made good progress in the clearing and removal of damaged equipment, which began on Friday.

“A comprehensive project plan with key deliverables and milestones is being implemented so that we restore power to the affected areas as quickly as possible.

“Work began on the construction and repair of the roof as it was largely destroyed in the fire. The roof must be adequately restored before new equipment is brought into the site,” he said, adding that this was advised by a structural engineer.

“The City of Tshwane teams have been systematically dismantling and removing the damaged equipment that burnt out in the substation.

This includes the disassembling of batteries, protection panels and associated equipment.”

He said teams have also started disconnecting 11kV flexibles and initiated testing of the power transformers.

“Where possible, different teams have been assigned to work simultaneously on different tasks to ensure better efficiency on the ground. Daily feedback reports on the progress will continue to be shared with residents who are affected,” he said.

“The local ward councillors have also been active in providing updates directly to residents.

The City of Tshwane will ensure that residents are kept abreast of developments.”

Matthews previously said it would take nine days for power to be restored in the affected areas. Affected areas are Moreleta Park, Pretorius Park, Mooikloof, Olympus, Woodlands and part of Garsfontein.
