Police foil planned robbery at Centurion mall

“The suspects in the other vehicle managed to evade arrest.”

Two suspects were arrested at Centurion mall for conspiracy to commit armed robbery on Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said the arrests came after a multi-disciplinary team comprising of members from crime intelligence, highway patrol and Tracker received information about a planned robbery that was to take place at Centurion mall.

Sello said police officers along with stakeholders, were posted strategically in and around the mall for observations.

“Two vehicles that were reportedly going to be used were spotted driving into the mall. The suspects realised that the police were in the vicinity and tried to flee the scene. Two suspects were, however, arrested.”

She said police seized the vehicle, a firearm and ammunition as well as a signal jammer and gloves.

“The suspects in the other vehicle managed to evade arrest.”

Sello said the duo was expected to appear before court soon.

Gauteng police provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, commended the members for their prompt reaction that resulted in foiling an armed robbery.

“When we launched our safer festive season operations, I declared that we are not going to share the same space with criminals. We have more boots on the ground, complemented by police reservists and members from support environments to ensure that criminals have no space to operate, ” said Mawela.

He added that the annual safer festive season operations were aimed at ensuring the safety of all within the country over the festive season period.

The operations were set to continue until the end of January next year.
