GBV campaign in the east closes off Women’s Month

Over 30 GBV cases have been reported at the Boschkop police station since the start of the month.

A gender-based violence campaign was finally held at the Skierlek taxi rank, east of Pretoria at the weekend.

The campaign was held after 16 people were arrested for domestic violence in and around the Boschkop policing area earlier this month.

Boshkop police, together with Gauteng community safety and the community patrollers braved the windy cold conditions on Saturday to address the issues the communities were facing.

“The community members were taught about the different types of abuse regarding gender and how to effectively deal with them,” said Boshkop police spokesperson Yeroboam Mbatsane.

He said the department touched on a number cases where the complainants were dissatisfied with the outcome or their cases not resolved.

The Gauteng department of community safety brought a user-friendly kiosk for the police to render their daily services to the public.

The kiosk will continuously visit the residents based on their need and safety of the members. Boschkop police arrested more than 16 people for domestic violence since the beginning of August.

Station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abakona Sithole earlier said this rise in GBV cases was a concern for the police and the community.

He said that over 30 GBV cases have been reported at the station since the start of the month.

“In response to this problem, the station commander and other stakeholders will be holding awareness campaigns and workshops to address the challenges women are facing in our communities,” Sithole said.

He said that it was unacceptable that so many cases were being reported during August, Women’s Month.

Residents were encouraged to report all cases to the police on 0800 10111 or 071 675 7350.
