Two SA air force members killed in Centurion aircraft crash

Two reserve pilots of the South African Air Force were killed when a Patchen Explorer aircraft they were flying in crashed in Valhalla on Wednesday morning.

The South African National Defence Force Military Command said in a statement the fatal crash happened at 09:30 during a scheduled general flying day at its Air Force museum.

“Both members were Reserve Force pilots flying for the SAAF Museum historical flights,” the statement read.

“The names of the deceased will be published soon after their families have been informed.”

SANDF said an investigation into the fatal crash was currently underway to determine the cause and events that led to the fatal crash.

“The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Mr Thabang Makwetla, the Chief of the South African National Defence Force General Solly Shoke and the Acting Chief of the South African Air Force, Major General Mzayifani Innocent Buthelezi expressed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased pilots.”
