West soup kitchen only regular meal for many

“This is my only meal for the day and I am so happy.”

A soup kitchen, run by the Hercules CPF and local police, feeds more than 200 homeless people and poverty stricken people in Daspoort in Pretoria West.

According to Hercules sector 2 CPF chairperson Catherine Schoerie, hunger and starvation can drive people to crime.

She said people might resort to stealing cables and other items to sell in order to buy food.

“Solving the problem of hunger in the area benefits both people who are hungry and those who suffer under crime,” she said.

“Although not all disadvantaged people are criminals, some may resort to crime out of desperation. Initiatives like this play a big role in preventing crime.”

The soup kitchen was also of value to disadvantaged people in the area as it was the only source of regular meals for some.

Beneficiary Chanton Aucamp told Rekord she was grateful for the meal.

“This is my only meal for the day, and I am so happy,” she said.

One of the soup kitchen’s founders Captain Riaan Groenewald said the soup kitchen was important not only to homeless people, but to residents who lost their jobs during the lockdown.

“Many people are jobless because of Covid-19 and they need to eat,” he said.

He thanked their various sponsors who made it possible to have not only soup and bread but also boerewors rolls on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
