Storm causes mayhem in the east

A number of tree branches were lying on electric cables which caused blackouts in parts of Silverton.

Heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms in the east of Pretoria left homes damaged and trees uprooted in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Some of the fallen trees and branches blocked roads causing traffic delays.

Ward councillor Ben Chapman said a mop-up operation was underway to remove the trees and debris from the roads.

“It felt like 30 minutes of Armageddon earlier this morning.

Following the thunderstorm, a number of tree branches were lying on electric cables which caused blackouts in parts of Silverton,” he said.

“I have been up since 03:00 responding to community members and ensuring that everyone is safe.”

Chapman said no injuries were reported. Areas affected include Silverton and Meyerspark.

He said that the clean-up could take the whole day as many streets were affected.

Motorists were advised to avoid the following streets:

– Fountain and Fakkel streets

– Schuch Street –

Catharina Street
